The series Desapariciones is a reflection of the artist’s experience living in Colombia during a global pandemic and paralleled by a period of revolution and conflict in the country in which untold numbers of people have been lost. The themes of absence and loss are felt deeply and explored through the disconnection and abstraction of the body. Through her work, the artist tries to reconcile incomprehensible loss of life and identity in this new reality by creating these embodiments of memory.

Through abstraction and subtraction the works of this series physically embody the metaphysical remains of the pieces of us that have disappeared.  

Desapariciones is the first body of work by Laura Renée Maier to explore the digital medium through digital paintings, digitally animated textiles as well as physical textile works that are encoded on the blockchain.

Disappearance Tests are a sub-series of small studies and experimentations within the DESAPARICIONES series
